Hitting the Long Ball

Recently, I’ve lost the ability to hit the long ball like I used to.  There was a time not to long ago when I used to average 320 or so off the tee, I was hitting my PW about 150 yds-high and hard without to much effort, it always came kind of naturally to me.

Lately I’ve lost a good 20 yards with every club, and I’d been puzzled as to why.  I came to the conclusion that I had lost the power in my golf swing because I had lost most of the flexibility in my core.  I used to hit the ball by turning my entire core in sync with my backswing and turn through impact with tremendous power.  With my loss of flexibility I noticed I was taking the club back entirely with my arms therefore losing torque and power.  Watch the right side of Tiger Woods shirt at the top of his backswing, it is rippled and bunched up due to the enormous amount of rotation his core makes during his swing.  Tiger Woods works out and stretches everyday, weird how things like that correlate.

The bottom line is; in order to hit the ball further a golfer must involve their core (hips & thighs up to their chest) in their golf swing.  In order to do this more effectively one must gain some amount of flexibility.  In golf from my experience flexibility equals distance.  Don’t go slipping a disc trying to drive a the green on a 350 yard par 4…!
